Bishop Walter Hawkins Died on Sunday Print E-mail

Bishop Walter Hawkins was a Grammy award winning legendary singer.

His brother, Edwin Hawkins, told the Associated Press that Walter “suffered bravely but now he will suffer no more and he will be greatly missed.”

Hawkins was a part of the legendary Edwin Hawkins Singers that recroded “Oh Happy Day” which was the first gospel song to cross over to mainstream and was named one of the RIAA Songs of the Century.

After “Oh Happy Day” Hawkins went to University of California Berkley and studied divinity. He recorded a solo album and founded the Love Center Church in Oakland California.

He founded the Love Center Choir at his church. That choir recorded a number of successful albums called Love Alive.

Hawkins won one grammy and three Dove Awards. He was also inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame.
