Where did the name Harriet come from?
Harriet
I am one of those artists who struggled to find an alias that encompassed who and what I was about. I am not ‘street’ I’m not ‘club’, I’m not any one specific thing so what better name than my own?

Well, my church – CLF, were putting together a compilation and featuring a number of the artists in the church. I had other material but wanted something new as I am putting together songs for my debut album. On the way to the studio, I still hadn’t got anything to record. Talked to God about it and by the time I got off the Jubilee line at Green Park, there was a song ready to be made…
Where do you see the group or yourself headed in this season?
I have finally set up a company home of my own ‘Unsided Music Group’ encompassing all parts of the music service publishing, artist management, tours, promotions etc. I believe in making opportunities for yourself and in so doing, make opportunities for others along the way. Expect to see a single release, an album, a video on Channel U and other stations.

I thought mainly of the people I already knew and knew that we could work well together…… For Example Hanif Williams from 272e has been a good friend of mine for many years. One of the people who has always believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. He’s worked with Sting, Mary J and a host of UK artists. He has a way of hearing what’s echoing around my head.

What are your favourite tunes on the CD and why?

There is a song called “Epoch” a passionate rock ballad. The title means the marking of a new beginning. I wrote it at a very ……’decided’ time in my life.

I am a solo artist so I miss the days of sharing the stage, the vibe with other band members. I used to be in a group called ‘ N-Daze’ ages ago. I miss the guys. I must say thought that I am all about the live vibe. So give me a bunch of musicians and I’m REAL happy!

We are aware that you took a break from the industry for a minute. What was that all about and how has it affected your ministry?
Harriet
The break I took was to find myself as an artist. To hone some of my skills, learn, learn, learn. At the same time honestly speaking I have never really given my career the heave ho I should have. Fear. Fear of failing AND of succeeding!!!! How daft is that??!!! How could I ever get anywhere? But thank God for his Blood, His Spirit, His Throne-given purpose on our lives….. Without them, where would any of us be?

What advice would you give to groups, the soloist, the young rapper, writer or producer who may be struggling?
Harriet
Be smart. If something is not working there is at least a 50/50 chance that what you are doing needs to change, or you need to push thru. Or maybe you need to get better. Don’t be afraid of that. Spend time with God. Find out which one it is, get all the info you can possibly get, find people who do what you do and get them to mentor you, Always work on making your skills better. That will never stop. And always believe in yourself. If you don’t who will?

What is the overall mission of Harriet?
Harriet
It’s hard to squeeze it into a couple of lines... I believe I am here to further the purposes of God. So that will take into the entertainment industry, among others. To bring hope, to inspire, to challenge, to declare the day of the Lord.
